The Louisiana Department of Education sponsors the Students of the Year Awards Program which recognizes outstanding students who have demonstrated excellence in all of the following areas: leadership, service, citizenship, academic and/or career and technical achievement. In Acadia Parish, each high school selects a recipient for their school's Student of the Year program. The five seniors then compete at the district level for one to be named Acadia Parish Student of the Year. That recipient then goes on the regional level and that winner advances advances to the State level.
Besides the application, students must submit a writing sample and complete an interview with a panel of judges. The Student of the Year must also prepare a portfolio of their accomplishments and activities. This year Iota High school had ten nominees with five seniors submitting their application for this prestigious award.
